FA Cup Preliminary Round

Tilbury v Stanway Rovers

Stanway made their exit from the FA Cup with  rather disappointing performance against a strong Tilbury side at Chadfields.

Tilbury opened the stronger and had Rovers penned inside for the opening period of the game. Rovers could not get their game together allowing the Dockers mid field to gain control. Despite most of the play Tilbury had little to show for it until the 21st minute when debutant goalkeeper Skinner left his penalty area in a chase for the ball and, having lost the race the ball was subsequently crossed for Ogunwamide to head into an unguarded net.

Little else was offered by either side in a rather un-entertaining first half.

Half Time – Tilbury 1 Stanway Rovers 0

The interval saw Blackwell introduced and immediately Rovers came more into the game taking the game to Tilbury. This was the best spell for Rovers and they duly equalised in the 53rd Minute when Blackwell’s free kick was stabbed home by Holdstock from close in. This spurred on Rovers and they took the game to Tilbury with Blackwell causing problems, and another cross was headed just wide by Wood. Tilbury responded well and after 61minutes  Sykes scored with a well placed shot from 15 yards. This brought Tilbury back into dominance and they increased their lead in the 71st minute when lack of concentration allowed an unmarked Ogunwamide to run in unchallenged to score.

The final part of the game saw Rovers come back into the game albeit too little too late.A good effort from Maybanks could have reduced the lead, his shot flashing across the face of goal. Holdstock scored in the 94th minute but was deemed offside.

Rovers will learn from their mistakes, and were by no means disgraced from a side operating at level four.

Result – Tilbury 3 Stanway Rovers 1
