Match Report

Stanway Rovers v Thetford Town

Saturday 17th August 2019

Rovers maintained their 100% record with a hard earned win against a robust Thetford side. On  a day perfectly suited for football they had the better of the exchanges and as early as the 7th minute Rovers came close to scoring the ball pinging about inside the penalty area. A push in the box gave Rovers the chance of an early lead but the resultant penalty was comfortably saved from Shaw. This after 9 minutes.

Seventeen minutes gone a good attempt by Shaw was turned away for a corner.

A dangerous tackle by the visitors was a straight card with the resultant free kick again turned away for a corner. At this time it was mostly Rovers in the ascendancy and it came a shock to the home side when in the 37th minute hesitancy in the home defense allowed Cambell to lob over the advancing keeper to give the visitors an unexpected lead which they held on to seeing the half out.

With the second half opening  Rovers continued to press without success, the Manager deciding to substitute Sloots for Maybanks. The change meant Rovers shift up a gear and looked dangerous with the pace up front, mainly with Woods and Shaw the main threat. However the visitors sat on their lead until in the 61st minute when Carver smashed the ball home from just outside the box following a corner not properly cleared by the visitors.

This spurred on Rovers who went for the winner. Andrews was causing  trouble with Maybanks assisting with a cross by the former headed high and wide by Wood. Rovers took the lead after 85 minutes when a long kick by the keeper was nodded on by Wood for Andrews to crash home from 12 yards to the delight of the home fans.

A minute later Andrews could have made the game safe by somehow scooping the ball over from less than five yards. The Thetford keeper had a fine match with a superb save from Shaw two minutes from time.

Overall, not the best of performances but the side continue to have commitment and were rewarded with all three points.

Carver was man of the match with other good performances from the improving O’Reilly not in his best position. A debut from Scott replacing Barber had a steady remaining thirty minutes.
