F.A.Vase 1st Qualifying Round

Hoddesdon Town v Stanway Rovers

Rovers progressed to the next round of the Vase following a close fought encounter with Hoddesdon Town played at Ware FC.

Rovers started in positive fashion taking the game to the hosts and early on the first attack by Rovers was scrambled away for a corner. The home side went close at the other end when it was Rovers turn to scramble the ball away. Gradually throughout the half Rovers dictated the play going close on several occasions, with several chances going begging. Totally against the run of play Hoddesdon took the lead in the 45th minute when Lee scored with a powerful header from a corner. Half time approached with Rovers wondering how they were  goal down.

Half Time : Hoddesdon Town 1 Stanway Rovers 0

Words must have been said in the dressing room  at  half time as Rovers opened up mounting attack after attack, with Hoddesdon on the back foot. However they could not turn the early chances into goals. Rovers finally levelled the game when Holdstock scored from close range following some good interplay, this after 56 minutes. Hoddesdon briefly responded and Rovers had a let off when Marfo-Jacobs had a good run in beating several defenders but saw his effort glance the outside of the post.

Rover responce was further pressure on the home side and it came as no surprise when Blackwell forced the ball home on 89 minutes following a goalmouth scramble.

Good result for Rovers although the missed chances could be costly. Credit to the side for their persistence which paid off in the end.

Carver was solid at the back and Kemp, probably in his best position had a good game with a steady and positive performance. Next up Wodson Park.
