Long Melford v Stanway Rovers

21st August 2019

Rovers picked up another three points to make it four wins in a row with a comprehensive win at Stoneylands. An unchanged side opened brightly and as early on a cross from Blackwell went begging with nobody able to connect. However all the early pressure paid off when Shaw gathered a loose ball to score with a powerful shot to put Rovers one up after 14minutes. Further work by Blackwell saw his cross narrowly headed over by Wood. It came as no surprise when Rovers went two up when, put through by Andrews Wood calmly slotted the ball home, this after 33 minutes. However Melford were let back in the game when Blackwell lost possession in the penalty area with Carver conceding a penalty. Roe converted for Melford with a well taken shot. Rovers responded in the best possible way when after 40 minutes a close range header from Wood increased the lead for the visitors following yet another lovely cross from Blackwell..

Half Time – Long Melford 1 Stanway Rovers 3

Rovers started positively in the second half and increased their lead with a drive from Blackwell in the 53rd minute. The floodgates opened soon after with Rovers with a further three goals in a 10 minute spell all worked with good football and positive crosses from the flanks, goals coming from Shaw, Andrews and Holdstock.

Sensible substitutions were made resting key players The eighth  goal came from Shaw heading in after 81 minutes, and a rocket from Kemp completed the rout after 84 minutes.

To their credit Melford never gave up although they were no match for Rovers with their best performance by far to date.

It is evident that with Andrews, Blackwell, Holdstock operating on the wings Rovers will take some holding in this League. All of the goals were scored from crosses and penetrating runs by the forwards.

Good to see Barber having his best game to date following some disappointing performances. Overall every player put in a shift and, following the Manager’s request for domination of games being turned into goals they responded in the best possible fashion.

Well done Rovers.
